Parabens: food authority proposes limit for food preservative

Paraben Free Skin Care ¹

It Makes Sense!

More and more concern is being raised in scientific communities about the possible negative effects on health caused by long term exposure to parabens and other chemical preservatives commonly used in skin care products.  The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and it can absorb both healthy and unhealthy substances that are applied to it.  A recent paper by Darbre et. al., “Concentrations of Parabens in Human Breast Tumours,”  discusses the concentrations of parabens found in human breast tumors.  Although many industry experts insist the paper is without merit, there is general agreement that further studies into the hazardous effects of preservatives are indeed warranted.

Formaldehyde-releasing chemical preservatives, such as Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, and Quaternium-15, may also cause allergic reactions or skin irritations, and significantly reduce the incredible benefits of botanical skin care products.

Some manufacturers may claim that their products are paraben free
¹, and it would be prudent to check how these products are preserved before using them.  Fungi and bacteria can thrive in skin care products, and effective protection over the shelf life of the formulation is critical to health and safety.

It is now apparently possible, nevertheless, to purchase skin care products that are essentially free
¹ of parabens, phthalates and all other formaldehyde-releasing chemicals typically used to preserve these complexes.

It makes no sense to wait for the results of further tests and risk your health when products that are both safe and effective are freely available.

¹ Note that it is unlikely that any formulations are 100% free of parabens or other traditional preservatives.  It is probable that minor, but physiologically trivial, trace elements (in the range of 1 - 10 parts per million, or 1,000 to 10,000 times lower than the approximately 1% concentrations typically used to preserve skin care products) may be present due to introduction through raw ingredients.
